Anisabeth Kaiya Danis Waswa-Rae, known as Kaiya, pursued her dream of becoming a goalie from a young age and eventually became the only female goalie on her hockey team in Thunder Bay, Ontario, after relocating from North Caribou Lake First Nation. Sadly, Kaiya passed away at 18, but her decision to register as an organ donor before her death has earned her recognition as a hero.
Kaiya’s funeral took place in North Caribou Lake, where her liver, both kidneys, heart, pancreas, lungs, and vessels were donated. Most of these organs have already been transplanted into recipients, with the vessels being stored for future use. Her mother, Stacey Rae, described Kaiya’s act of organ donation as her bravest and most impactful, saving the lives of seven individuals.
Tragically, Kaiya’s death was a result of suicide, as she had been battling mental health issues and facing bullying. Despite her struggles, Kaiya was known for her infectious smile that could light up a room. A special hero walk was organized at the Thunder Bay Regional Health Sciences Centre to honor Kaiya’s selfless act of organ donation, with family and loved ones paying their respects.
Hailing from North Caribou Lake First Nation, Kaiya belonged to the Nishnawbe Aski Nation and is believed to be the youngest member to have donated organs within the organization. Her family hopes that Kaiya’s altruism will inspire others to consider organ donation. Tributes to Kaiya have flooded social media platforms, and a fundraising campaign has been initiated to support her family.
Kaiya’s passion for hockey began at a young age when she learned the sport from a visiting group in her community. Despite initially not knowing how to skate, her determination led her to excel as a goalie for various teams. The Thunder Bay Elks Hockey Association, where Kaiya played a significant role in securing a city championship, paid tribute to her dedication and selflessness as an organ donor.
Graduating from Dennis Franklin Cromarty, an all-Indigenous high school in Thunder Bay, Kaiya had recently obtained a certification in heavy equipment operation and aspired to work alongside her father. Remembered for her kindness and compassion, Kaiya’s mother hopes her daughter’s legacy of helping others and saving lives through organ donation lives on.
As Kaiya’s family and community mourn her passing, they find solace in the fact that her final act has brought hope and healing to others. The impact of Kaiya’s generosity and selflessness continues to resonate, with her memory cherished by all who knew her.
