Sandy Brondello is poised to make history as the inaugural head coach of the Toronto Tempo basketball team. Her contract with the New York Liberty was not extended following a season where the team faced multiple injuries and was eliminated in the playoffs’ opening round. Despite being a contender for the head coach position with the Dallas Wings and the Seattle Storm, Brondello opted to join the newly established Tempo, who are scheduled to commence play next season, as revealed by The Next website.
During her four-season tenure with the New York Liberty, Brondello amassed a notable record of 107-53, making her the winningest coach in the franchise’s history. The team started strong by clinching nine consecutive victories but faced setbacks due to injuries in the subsequent months. Prior to her stint with the Liberty, Brondello guided the Phoenix Mercury to a championship title in her eight years with the team. Following her success in leading the Mercury to the WNBA Finals in 2021, Brondello took on the Liberty’s coaching role in 2022.
After falling short in the 2023 finals against Las Vegas, New York secured their first WNBA championship in 2024 with a thrilling overtime victory over Minnesota in Game 5.
