“Mom Club Strengthens Bodies and Bonds at Local Gym”

Date:

A group of mothers are not only strengthening their muscles at a local gym but also building a supportive community. Islander Athletics in St. John’s offers specialized postpartum strength classes, fostering connections beyond the gym environment. The “Mom Club” class enables parents to engage in workouts tailored for new mothers while dedicated volunteers, known as “baby wranglers,” care for the children.

Kent Nash, the gym owner, notes that the Mom Club is the fastest-growing class at the crossfit gym, expanding from three to eight weekly sessions since its launch in fall 2024. These classes are conducted in collaboration with Vitality Wellness, another local business.

Ashley Fraser, a pregnancy and postpartum athleticism coach at Islander Athletics, curates workouts specifically designed for the postpartum journey. The focus is on rebuilding core strength, pelvic floor muscles, and the overall kinetic chain, with exercises modified and tailored to individual postpartum stages.

First-time mom Kathryn Baker emphasizes the importance of exercise for her physical and mental well-being postpartum. She appreciates the opportunity to work out alongside her baby in a supportive environment where the children are well looked after.

Fraser highlights that the classes offer not just physical benefits but also support mental health. The sense of community within the group is particularly valuable for participants like Caity Brawn, who finds comfort in connecting with other mothers in a similar life stage.

The presence of baby wranglers allows mothers like Brawn to focus on their workout without distractions. These volunteers, including first responders, grandparents, and students, play a crucial role in facilitating the program.

Looking ahead, Fraser expresses her aspirations for the program, aiming to empower every woman during the postpartum period. The inclusive and supportive environment created by the Mom Club at Islander Athletics continues to make a positive impact on new mothers seeking to rebuild their strength and connections within a community.
