“Sudbury Group Sheds Light on Bats with ‘Bat Walks'”

Date:

A Sudbury environmental group is aiming to dispel common fears about bats by sparking curiosity and interest in the city’s local bat population. The Junction Creek Stewardship Committee recently organized a “bat walk” at Park Lawn Cemetery, where participants were equipped with iPads containing echometers to detect the high-frequency sounds bats emit through echolocation.

Evan Voutier, an ecological technician with the committee, highlighted the growing fascination with bats in the Sudbury region and the lack of comprehensive research on local bat species. The committee’s research focuses on studying how bats utilize various habitats across Greater Sudbury, including abandoned mines that serve as winter hibernation sites for some bat species.

Biologist and naturalist Franco Mariotti, a volunteer with the group, emphasized the importance of understanding local bat populations due to ongoing threats they face, such as white-nose syndrome, a fungal disease causing significant declines in bat numbers. Mariotti also mentioned the risks posed by wind turbines, which can lead to internal injuries and fatalities among bats due to rapid pressure changes.

Despite the challenges faced by bat populations, research conducted by the group indicates that bats are still prevalent in the Sudbury area, with all eight Ontario bat species being observed in Junction Creek. Mariotti stressed the vital role bats play in controlling insect populations, which is crucial for maintaining ecological balance.

The committee plans to continue organizing public “bat walks” to raise awareness and change perceptions about bats. The next event is scheduled for August 19, offering the community an opportunity to learn more about these fascinating creatures and their significance in the local ecosystem.
