Last year, sales representative Ryan Crumly had foreseen a surge in farmers adopting drone technology once it became permissible to use them for spraying insecticides and fungicides on crops. His prediction appears to be coming true.
Towards the end of June, Health Canada removed its restrictions, allowing drones to apply approved pesticides. This policy change has sparked a high demand among farmers for this technology. Titan Aero Drones’ Crumly mentioned that the shift has led to a significant increase in inquiries and sales of drones, with nearly 80 units selling out within days.
Farmers and drone suppliers are enthusiastic about the new regulations, emphasizing that drones offer superior efficiency compared to ground sprayers and aircraft. The adoption of pesticide-spraying drones is anticipated to be substantial, as several farmers express their intentions to purchase one in the near future.
Pesticide-spraying drones are being hailed as a cutting-edge technology with various advantages. They outperform planes and helicopters by being able to operate at night and maneuver closer to obstacles like trees and power lines. Additionally, adverse weather conditions such as flooding have prompted interest from farmers who faced difficulties with traditional ground sprayers.
The ease of operation is another highlight of drone technology. Farmers can program the drone’s spraying patterns and let it operate autonomously, requiring minimal intervention. This hands-off approach has led Crumly to liken the farmer’s role to that of a “babysitter” who mainly handles battery changes and refueling tasks.
Greg Hill, a farmer and rancher from southeast Saskatchewan, envisions drones making a significant impact in agriculture. He points out that traditional ground sprayers can damage substantial crop areas, resulting in significant financial losses, a problem that drones can avoid.
While the initial cost of spray drones can run into tens of thousands of dollars, they are still more cost-effective than high-end ground sprayers that cost hundreds of thousands. The operational expenses are also lower, with drones costing approximately 83 cents per acre to operate compared to $10.50 for high-clearance ground sprayers.
Despite the cost considerations, farmers like Hill and Raymond Phillips from Alberta are closely monitoring advancements in drone technology. Phillips acknowledges that beyond the initial purchase price, additional investments such as mixing systems, generators, and pilot licensing are necessary. However, he foresees himself acquiring a drone within the next few years, believing that drones are poised to revolutionize agricultural practices.
