“Beware of ‘Hasslers’: Negative Social Circles Speed Up Aging”

Date:

A recent study has shed light on the impact of negative influences in social circles, known as “hasslers,” on individuals’ health and aging. The study, published in the journal Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, examined the social networks of over 2,000 individuals to identify sources of support and stress.

Participants provided saliva samples for epigenetic analysis, revealing that individuals with hasslers in their lives showed accelerated aging at a cellular level, aging approximately nine months faster than their biological age on average. The study highlighted a cumulative effect, with each additional hassler contributing to a 1.5% increase in aging per year.

According to lead author Brea Perry, negative relationships can impact one’s aging process and overall well-being significantly. The study found that around 30% of participants had a hassler in their lives, described as individuals who “take more than they give.”

Most of the hasslers identified in the study were family members, though co-workers and roommates were also mentioned. Perry noted that friends can also be hasslers, but fewer examples were reported, possibly due to people being more inclined to sever ties with toxic friends than family members.

The study emphasized the toll that chronic stress from hasslers can take on the body, leading to increased cortisol levels, inflammation, depression, anxiety, and weakened immunity. Over time, these effects can have adverse impacts on cardiovascular health and overall lifespan.

Experts recommend setting boundaries and open communication as strategies for dealing with hasslers. Establishing healthy boundaries with individuals causing stress can help mitigate the negative effects on mental and physical well-being. Additionally, seeking therapy and understanding the root causes of people-pleasing behaviors can aid in creating a healthier dynamic in relationships.

Creating a supportive environment and prioritizing self-care are crucial in managing relationships with hasslers. Setting and enforcing boundaries, even if it means cutting ties with toxic individuals, is essential for maintaining emotional and physical health.
