WestJet Preps for Potential Strike with Flight Cancellations

Date:

Some travelers are feeling nervous as WestJet initiates its first wave of flight cancellations in anticipation of a potential strike by flight attendants during the upcoming long weekend. The airline has axed 276 flights as a precaution to avoid passengers and crew getting stranded, advising travelers to verify their flight status before heading to the airport.

WestJet stated that the cancellations are a response to the strike notice from the union and the failure to reach an agreement. The airline’s latest proposal aimed to provide an advanced agreement for its cabin crew, addressing the main concerns highlighted by the union. However, the union has expressed that the proposal falls short of addressing all their issues.

In the event that an agreement is not reached by Sunday morning, either party could initiate a work stoppage, leading to the cancellation of numerous flights over the long weekend. WestJet continues to negotiate with the Canadian Union of Public Employees (CUPE), representing 4,400 flight attendants, in the hopes of finalizing a new contract.

While progress has been made in the negotiations, unresolved issues remain on the table, according to the union. Both parties are striving to avoid a strike and are committed to resolving the matter through dialogue. Federal mediators have been involved in facilitating discussions between the two sides.

As travelers face potential disruptions, WestJet has allowed passengers with bookings between July 30 and August 4 to make changes or cancellations without fees. Refund options vary based on the type of booking, with certain passengers eligible for cash refunds while others receive travel credits. Affected travelers will be informed of any changes, and the airline will make necessary accommodations or refunds as per regulations.

Amidst these uncertainties, travelers like Gani Suleman from Edmonton are grappling with changing travel plans and uncertainties. Suleman expressed frustration with the lack of clarity and challenges in adjusting his bookings. The ongoing dispute revolves around compensation for ground duties, a key issue in the negotiations between WestJet and the flight attendants’ union.
