“Trump Plan Aims to Roll Back Fuel Efficiency Standards”

Date:

U.S. President Donald Trump has put forth a plan to reduce fuel efficiency standards that were established by former President Joe Biden last year. The aim is to facilitate the sale of gasoline-fueled vehicles by automakers. Trump’s move is seen as an attempt to reverse one of Biden’s key environmental initiatives, which sought to encourage greater adoption of electric vehicles. According to Trump, there is a demand for gasoline-powered cars.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has proposed a significant decrease in fuel efficiency requirements for model years 2022 to 2031. The new proposal suggests an average of 34.5 miles per gallon by 2031, down from the previous target of 50.4 miles per gallon.

Under Biden’s administration, NHTSA had increased fuel efficiency standards by 8% annually for model years 2024-2025 and 10% for 2026. The rules were designed to prompt automakers to produce more electric vehicles without an immediate ban on gas-powered cars.

NHTSA estimates that the proposed changes would lower initial vehicle costs by $930 but could lead to an increase in fuel consumption by approximately 100 billion gallons by 2050. This could cost Americans an additional $185 billion for fuel and result in a 5% rise in carbon dioxide emissions.

In addition to revising the fuel economy standards, the proposal includes plans to end credit trading among automakers by 2028 and eliminate certain credits for fuel-saving technologies. This move is aimed at preventing what NHTSA referred to as a “windfall” for electric vehicle-exclusive manufacturers.

California Governor Gavin Newsom criticized the proposal, stating that it would force Americans to spend more on fuel and worsen air quality. The transportation sector is a significant contributor to greenhouse gas emissions in the U.S.

Trump’s administration has been taking steps to support the sale of gas-powered vehicles and discourage the production of electric vehicles. This includes revoking electric vehicle tax credits and preventing California from banning traditional gas-powered vehicle sales after 2035.

Overall, the proposed changes in fuel economy standards could have a substantial impact on the automotive industry and the environment, with various stakeholders expressing concerns and support for the initiatives.
