Instagram is updating its teen account settings to align with PG-13 movie guidelines, as announced by Meta. The effectiveness of these changes is under scrutiny by tech experts. Previously, teen account users were restricted from viewing “sensitive content” such as sexually suggestive or violent posts. The new guidelines will extend to avoiding recommending posts with strong language, risky stunts, or content that could promote harmful behaviors, according to Meta’s recent announcement.
Furthermore, teenagers will be prevented from following accounts that consistently share age-inappropriate content and from viewing search results related to specific words like “gore” or “alcohol.” Additionally, teens will not be able to access links on Instagram that violate the updated guidelines.
Meta aims to align its regulations with a recognized standard familiar to parents. The implementation of these changes will commence for users in Canada, the U.S., U.K., and Australia on Tuesday, with full rollout expected by the end of 2025.
Teen accounts, introduced in September 2024 for users under 18, default to private settings, restrict receiving messages from strangers, and silence notifications at night. Meta has progressively enhanced restrictions on teen accounts, with the most significant change being the recent update.
However, some experts believe these controls are belated. Richard Lachman, a professor at Toronto Metropolitan University, views content regulation through keyword filtering as rudimentary. Despite these efforts, there are concerns that teens could circumvent the controls by falsifying their age. Meta plans to employ age prediction technology to identify such users by analyzing account creation dates and interactions with platform content.
While Meta’s approach has been critiqued for its opacity, the company uses AI technology to detect potential violations. Notwithstanding, the efficacy of these measures remains uncertain, as research indicates existing teen account settings have not effectively filtered out unsafe content. The Heat Initiative study found that nearly half of teenage Instagram users encountered inappropriate content or messages in the past month.
Experts stress the importance of parental vigilance, as relying solely on platform safeguards may create a false sense of security. Empowering parents with tools to oversee their children’s online activities is crucial. Communication with children about social media risks and fostering trust are emphasized as essential components of promoting responsible digital citizenship.
