B.C. Premier David Eby has decided against implementing new retaliatory actions against the United States following an additional tariff on softwood lumber. However, he affirmed that existing countermeasures would be upheld. In an interview on Rosemary Barton Live, Eby stated that pursuing independent actions may not be the most effective strategy and emphasized the importance of maintaining the current restrictions.
These restrictions involve the exclusion of all American alcoholic beverages from British Columbia-operated liquor stores and the exclusion of U.S. firms from public procurement. Eby reiterated that these measures would persist until a resolution is reached through negotiations with the U.S.
After the U.S. imposed a 10% tariff on Canadian lumber in addition to the existing 35% tariff, Eby urged the federal government to intervene to safeguard forestry workers. Industry Minister Mélanie Joly assured that support for the softwood lumber sector would be forthcoming, including financial aid distributed through banks with the backing of the Business Development Bank of Canada.
Expressing urgency, Eby emphasized the immediate need for financial assistance from Ottawa to prevent further job losses in the forestry sector. Andy Rielly, chair of the Independent Wood Processors Association of British Columbia, highlighted the critical situation faced by small and medium-sized lumber companies, stressing the importance of supporting the value-added sector for the future of the forest industry in British Columbia.
Amidst the ongoing Canada-U.S. trade conflict, tensions within Team Canada surfaced regarding the focus and response to President Donald Trump’s tariffs. Eby voiced concerns about the federal government’s attention to issues affecting British Columbia compared to provinces like Ontario and Quebec.
