Dolly Parton’s journey from humble beginnings to success has been a source of inspiration for her music, a theme park, a podcast, and now a musical set to debut on Broadway later this year.
Titled “Dolly: A True Original Musical,” the production promises to authentically convey Dolly’s life story through her own words and the songs that have shaped her experiences. In a video announcement, the 80-year-old icon emphasized the sincerity of the narrative, delving into her roots, losses, loves, and personal growth.
The musical will feature a mix of new compositions created specifically for the show and some of Dolly’s most iconic hits, including “I Will Always Love You,” “Jolene,” “Coat of Many Colors,” and “9 to 5.”
Scheduled to kick off in New York City on December 7, the performances are slated to run until November 21, 2027. Parton expressed her excitement, calling the opportunity a “dream come true” as she approaches her seventh decade in the industry, marked by over 3,000 songs and more than 100 million album sales globally. She is recognized in the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame and the Country Music Hall of Fame.
The musical initially premiered in Nashville last summer, drawing a sold-out audience during its six-week stint at the Fisher Center for the Performing Arts. Director Bartlett Sher highlighted the profound impact Dolly has had on audiences, with her name evoking joy and inspiration in countless fans.
The production aims to showcase a raw and unfiltered portrayal of Dolly’s life, emphasizing that her story extends beyond the glitz of rhinestones. Tickets for the show will be available to the public starting on Friday, July 10.
