“National Dialogue Launched to Improve Men’s Health”

The federal government has initiated a “national dialogue” to shape a forthcoming plan concerning the health of men and boys. Health Minister Marjorie Michel emphasized in a press briefing on Monday that these issues are often neglected, misunderstood, or disregarded.

Michel stated, “When discussing health in our nation, it is crucial not to exclude anyone. Today, the focus is on men and boys.” Health Canada outlines that the objective of the plan is to cultivate “supportive and secure environments, challenge detrimental stereotypes, diminish stigma, and encourage men of all age groups to seek assistance when necessary.”

Commencing on March 2, Canadians are invited to complete an online survey to contribute to the federal strategy. Input will be accepted until June 1, with the plan anticipated to be unveiled later this year.

At the press event, Minister of Women and Gender Equality Rechie Valdez highlighted the common message men and boys receive to tough it out, remain silent, and handle issues independently. Valdez emphasized, “True strength lies in looking after your health, being there for those who rely on you, and knowing when to seek help.”

In collaboration with Movember Canada, the government is collaborating with parliamentarians, provincial and territorial partners, community organizations, and groups to develop the strategy. Statistics Canada data reveals that men in Canada confront specific health obstacles, such as elevated rates of suicide, substance abuse, and premature or avoidable deaths.

Michel pointed out that enhancing men’s health would not only alleviate suffering but also enhance well-being and bolster the economy. As per Movember Canada’s 2025 report titled “The Real Face of Men’s Health,” enhancing men’s health could potentially save $12.4 billion annually in the country.

Health Canada underscores that the emphasis on men’s health does not detract from the ongoing efforts to support women’s health. Valdez stressed, “By enhancing men and boys’ physical, emotional, and mental health, we are fostering healthier, stronger, and safer communities for all, including women and children.”

This development comes after the implementation of similar international strategies for men’s health in countries such as Australia, Ireland, and the United Kingdom.
