“Exercise at Diagnosis Aids Cancer Recovery”

Date:

B.C. Cancer is aiming to incorporate exercise into its cancer patients’ recovery plan starting at diagnosis, as research indicates that “prehabilitation” through exercise can enhance long-term healing, as stated by a Kelowna doctor. Dr. Lauren Capozzi, the inaugural cancer physiatrist at B.C. Cancer, is leading the initiative to integrate exercise into the treatment regimen for cancer patients in Kelowna with the collaboration of various specialists like physiotherapists, occupational therapists, dietitians, and speech therapists from the outset of the diagnosis to optimize patient care and reduce healthcare costs.

The pioneering cancer physiatry program by Capozzi commenced in September, accessible to patients through referrals from their primary care physicians, with 100 patient referrals received within the past five months. The program’s objective is to expand cancer physiatry across the province.

Prehabilitation, as explained by the doctor, involves preparing cancer patients physically and managing their pain before treatment, aiding in their recovery post-treatment. Contrary to common belief that cancer rehabilitation starts post-treatment, initiating an exercise regimen upon diagnosis can accelerate recovery and enable patients to resume their usual activities sooner.

A significant study published recently highlighted the positive impact of exercise on survival rates in colon cancer patients, underscoring the importance of integrating exercise programs into cancer care at B.C. Cancer. Capozzi envisions British Columbia at the forefront of incorporating exercise into cancer care programs and is actively working to expand the initiative beyond Kelowna.
