“Heated Rivalry Musical Parody Hits Toronto Stage”

Date:

The off-Broadway production, “Heated Rivalry: The Unauthorized Musical Parody,” is finally taking advantage of its home ice as it arrives in Toronto for a four-night engagement at Soulpepper Theatre starting on July 9. Canadian director-producer Alan Kliffer emphasizes the significance of timing and momentum in bringing the show to Canada, stating, “It really is time that we brought it over to Canada.”

The show’s inception in Toronto mirrors its unique origin story. Inspired by the popular Canadian TV series “Heated Rivalry,” writer-composer Dylan MarcAurele envisioned a musical adaptation centered around the romance between characters Shane Hollander (Hudson Williams) and Ilya Rozanov (Connor Storrie) after binge-watching the series.

MarcAurele recalls the rapid rise of the production, evolving from sporadic songwriting sessions to fully booked concert readings before transitioning to an off-Broadway debut, buoyed by the fervent support of the show’s fan base. Kliffer expresses astonishment at the swift success of the off-Broadway rendition, noting its extended run due to overwhelming demand.

Soulpepper Theatre in Toronto serves as the ideal venue for the Canadian premiere, according to Kliffer, who praises his collaboration with artistic director Paolo Santalucia. Santalucia echoes this sentiment, affirming that the musical parody naturally aligns with Soulpepper’s ethos of celebrating Canadian creativity.

The Toronto showcase, scheduled from July 9 to July 12, will be presented as a staged concert reading to accommodate logistical constraints. Kliffer assures audiences that despite the format, the production will remain engaging with minimal staging elements. Following Toronto, the cast will perform at Montreal’s Just for Laughs comedy festival before embarking on an international journey, with plans for a U.K. production in the near future.

Anticipating further growth, Kliffer envisions a full-scale production in Canada and eagerly awaits the opportunity for the TV series’ cast and crew to witness the live adaptation. He expresses hope that key figures from the series will attend the Toronto staging, underscoring his aspiration for broader recognition and success for the production.
