“Murder Charge Laid in Samuel Bird Case”

Date:

The discovery of 14-year-old Samuel Bird’s remains has led to the laying of a murder charge in connection with his death, Edmonton police revealed on Thursday. Samuel’s mother, Alanna Bird, shared the news on social media, and later, the Edmonton Police Service confirmed that the remains were found in a rural area outside the city. Bryan Farrell, aged 38, was arrested and charged with second-degree murder and interfering with a body in relation to Bird’s case.

In addition to the murder charge, Farrell is facing 13 other charges, including aggravated assault, arson to property with disregard for human life, unauthorized possession of a firearm, assaulting a peace officer with a weapon, uttering threats, and fraud over $5,000. Court documents indicate that the arson charges are related to the west Edmonton property that Bird visited on the night he went missing. The police executed a search warrant at the house on September 18, and shortly after, the property was engulfed in flames, deemed a suspicious fire by EPS.

Farrell is also accused of threatening a woman regarding Samuel’s mother. The police confirmed that Farrell is the sole suspect in the case, and they are not seeking any other individuals in connection with Bird’s death. Bird, a member of Paul First Nation, disappeared on June 1 after leaving his residence in west Edmonton to visit a friend. His disappearance prompted an extensive search effort involving family, volunteers, and search and rescue teams, with Alanna Bird expressing gratitude for the support received in the search for her son.

Tiera Williams, who actively participated in the search for Samuel Bird, expressed a mix of emotions upon hearing the news of the discovery. Now that Bird’s remains have been found, the focus shifts to seeking justice for the young boy. Surveillance footage showed Bird at Holy Cross School grounds at around 8:30 p.m. on June 1 before he was last seen at a friend’s home on 150th Street and 106th Avenue. Earlier investigations suggested foul play, with authorities believing he was deceased and his body concealed outside the city.

Detective Jared Buhler, the primary investigator from the EPS homicide section, expressed relief at being able to provide some closure and justice for Samuel’s loved ones after an extensive investigation. The case has now reached a significant milestone with the discovery of Samuel Bird’s remains.
