Canadians Felix Auger-Aliassime and Denis Shapovalov progressed to the quarterfinals at the Swiss Indoors in Basel, Switzerland, following convincing straight-set victories.
Auger-Aliassime, the two-time champion in 2022 and 2023, showcased an impressive performance by delivering 28 aces in a 7-6 (7), 7-6 (5) triumph over Marin Cilic from Croatia. The Montreal native dominated by winning 96% of points on his first serve without facing any break points. His recent win extends his indoor winning streak to six matches after claiming the Brussels title last week. As the fifth seed, Auger-Aliassime is still in contention for a spot at the season-ending ATP Finals in Turin.
On the other hand, Shapovalov secured a 7-6 (5), 6-2 victory over Valentin Royer from France, with a powerful display of 11 aces. The player from Richmond Hill, Ontario, managed to break his opponent three times and won an impressive 76% of first-serve points.
Looking ahead, Shapovalov is set to face Joao Fonseca from Brazil, while Auger-Aliassime will confront Jaume Munar from Spain, who caused an upset by defeating second-seeded Ben Shelton of the United States in straight sets (6-3, 6-4).
If both Auger-Aliassime and Shapovalov secure quarterfinal wins, they are poised to meet in an all-Canadian semifinal showdown.
