BCE Announces 690 Job Cuts in Ongoing Reorganization

Date:

BCE, the parent company of Bell Canada, has officially announced the reduction of 690 positions as part of an ongoing reorganization effort initiated late last year. Approximately 230 of these job cuts are unionized roles, with most employees being given the option of voluntary separation packages.

According to a statement from Bell, these workforce adjustments are aligned with various operational strategies, including transitioning customers to a more robust and easily maintainable fibre network, as well as ongoing enhancements in operational efficiency.

Last November, Bell eliminated nearly 700 positions, primarily comprising non-unionized management roles nationwide. In October of the same year, BCE declared its intention to achieve $1.5 billion in cost savings by 2028 through a comprehensive company-wide transformation and sustained focus on operational efficiencies.

In previous years, BCE underwent significant restructuring, including a nine percent reduction in its workforce in 2024, affecting approximately 4,800 employees. The company also divested numerous radio stations and discontinued several television newscasts. This followed the elimination of about 1,300 positions, equivalent to three percent of its workforce, in June 2023.

During the latest financial quarter, BCE reported a profit of $616 million for common shareholders, or 66 cents per diluted share, compared to $630 million, or 68 cents per diluted share, in the first quarter of 2025. CEO Mirko Bibic highlighted the company’s increased revenue target for its expanding AI business, with plans to establish a series of data centers.

BCE anticipates generating approximately $2 billion in revenue from its AI-powered enterprise solutions by 2028, surpassing its previous goal of $1.5 billion over three years. Alongside its focus on fibre, wireless, and digital media, BCE considers AI-powered enterprise solutions a fundamental component of its strategic three-year plan.
