Canadian comedian Mike Myers was honored at the Canadian Screen Awards (CSA) on Sunday night, receiving the Icon Award for his significant contributions to the entertainment industry. Expressing his gratitude through tears, Myers thanked his native country, Canada, for shaping his career and iconic roles in movies like “Austin Powers,” “Wayne’s World,” and “Shrek.”
Last year, Myers led the “elbows up” movement in response to U.S. President Donald Trump’s threats against Canada. During his emotional speech at the CSA event, he acknowledged the support of the Canadian people, humorously thanking the Canadian taxpayer for being a strong ally with 40 million people behind him.
Myers also appreciated the Toronto Transit Commission (TTC) and the staff at Canada House in London for their support during his early days. He reminisced about struggling financially and being offered a job that helped him make ends meet.
Colleagues and friends paid tribute to Myers through a montage of his career highlights, with Will Arnett, Eddie Murphy, Cameron Diaz, and others praising him for creating memorable characters and influencing comedy and film. Myers was visibly moved as he accepted the award from Dave Foley, a fellow Canadian comedian.
In a lighthearted moment, Myers joked about his love for Canada and thanked his family for their support. He also honored fellow Canadian screen stars like John Candy, Martin Short, Eugene Levy, and the late Catherine O’Hara for their contributions to the industry.
