Prime Minister Mark Carney warmly greeted the Artemis II astronauts in Ottawa, commending their recent journey around the moon as a source of inspiration for the entire nation. Carney emphasized the importance of teamwork, dedication, courage, and human ingenuity, stating that this mission was just the beginning of greater achievements. The astronauts, including Canadian astronauts Jeremy Hansen and Jenni Gibbons, along with NASA astronauts commander Reid Wiseman, pilot Victor Glover, and mission specialist Christina Koch, are currently on a visit to Ottawa and Montreal to share insights from their Artemis II mission.
During their stay in Canada, the astronauts are participating in various public events, engaging with students and stakeholders in the Canadian space sector, and granting a limited number of interviews. The Artemis II crew’s expedition, which began on April 1 and involved a journey around the moon, marked a significant milestone as they traveled farther from Earth than any human in history. This mission is NASA’s initial step towards returning humans to the moon’s surface and laying the groundwork for future crewed missions to Mars.
Both Carney and Hansen highlighted the significance of the mission and its role in advancing space exploration. Hansen expressed gratitude for the warm reception in Ottawa, contrasting it with the vastness of space. He presented Carney with a maple leaf patch that accompanied the crew on their mission, symbolizing their shared journey. In return, Carney gifted Hansen with the Canadian flag that flew over Parliament’s Peace Tower on the day of the spacecraft’s splashdown.
The crew’s visit included a public event at the National Arts Centre in Ottawa, where they discussed the decision to return to the moon and interacted with children, reflecting on the importance of unity and collaboration. Hansen touched upon the challenges faced during the mission’s preparation and emphasized the need for collective effort in overcoming obstacles, drawing parallels to global relationships.
Later in the day, the crew proceeded to the Canadian Museum of History in Gatineau, Que., where they engaged with parliamentarians and stakeholders to further discuss their mission and its implications. The visit of the Artemis II astronauts continues to captivate and inspire Canadians, showcasing the country’s capabilities on the global stage and underscoring the collaborative spirit essential for future space exploration endeavors.
