A drug addiction counselor with a license, responsible for providing ketamine to actor Matthew Perry, leading to his death, received a two-year prison sentence on Wednesday. Erik Fleming, aged 56, was sentenced by Judge Sherilyn Peace Garnett in a Los Angeles federal court. Fleming expressed his remorse to the judge, acknowledging the gravity of his mistakes. He cooperated with authorities early on, revealing the drug dealer, Jasveen Sangha, who was later sentenced to 15 years in prison. Fleming was the fourth of five defendants to plead guilty in connection with Perry’s death in 2023.
Despite Fleming’s cooperation, prosecutors highlighted his deliberate actions as a drug counselor selling illegal drugs to a known drug addict, which influenced his sentencing. Defense lawyers sought a lighter sentence, emphasizing Fleming’s efforts to make amends for his actions. Fleming’s involvement came to light after Perry, seeking more ketamine for his depression treatment, was introduced to him by a friend. Fleming, a former producer turned counselor, sourced ketamine from Sangha, selling it to Perry’s assistant, Kenneth Iwamasa.
Tragically, Perry was found dead after consuming ketamine procured by Fleming. The medical examiner determined ketamine’s acute effects as the primary cause of Perry’s death, with drowning as a secondary factor. Perry, famous for his role as Chandler Bing on the sitcom Friends, passed away at 54. Fleming’s sentencing is a part of the legal proceedings surrounding Perry’s untimely demise. The foundation established in Perry’s honor will benefit from an auction of his possessions, including Friends memorabilia, following his passing.
