Canadian ice hockey-themed drama series “Heated Rivalry” has clinched the prestigious Peabody Award. The collaboration between Crave, Bell Media, and HBO Max in the U.S. saw unexpected success upon its launch in November 2025. The show was recently announced as one of the 11 winners in the entertainment category by the Peabody Awards panel.
According to a press release, the jurors praised “Heated Rivalry” for its intricate exploration of themes such as sexuality and emotional connections, promoting positive masculinity ideals and leaving a significant cultural impact on television this year. The series, helmed by Montreal’s Jacob Tierney and inspired by the works of Halifax’s Rachel Reid, narrates a clandestine romantic relationship between fictional professional ice hockey players Shane Hollander (portrayed by Hudson Williams) and Ilya Rozanov (played by Connor Storrie).
Director-screenwriter Jacob Tierney, in conjunction with the show’s official Instagram page, expressed gratitude for the accolade, emphasizing the complexity and depth of the storytelling. Author Rachel Reid also shared her pride in the production team, adding an emoticon expressing joy. The Directors Guild of Canada in Ontario joined in the celebration, lauding the show’s crew on social media for their outstanding work.
The 86th Annual Peabody Awards ceremony, scheduled for May 31 in Los Angeles, will honor the recipients, including the team behind “Heated Rivalry.”
