The Seattle Mariners secured an early lead in the American League Championship Series (ALCS) on Sunday by defeating the Toronto Blue Jays 3-1 at Rogers Centre. Cal Raleigh’s solo home run in the sixth inning contributed to Seattle’s two-run surge. Jorge Polanco’s two RBI singles and a solid six innings pitched by Bryce Miller (1-0) sealed the victory. Andres Munoz closed the game with a clean ninth inning to earn the save.
Despite a leadoff homer by George Springer and a single by Anthony Santander in the second inning, the Blue Jays struggled at the plate, managing only two hits. Toronto’s starter, Kevin Gausman (1-1), settled in after a rocky start, retiring 15 consecutive batters before Raleigh’s game-tying home run.
Gausman was replaced after a walk to Julio Rodriguez, leading to an RBI single by Polanco. Polanco later drove in Randy Arozarena for an insurance run in the eighth inning. The loss snapped the Blue Jays’ six-game home winning streak, following a three-day break post their victory over the New York Yankees.
In Game 2 of the series, the Toronto Blue Jays were set to face rookie right-hander Trey Yesavage, who set a postseason record by striking out 11 Yankees in 5 1/3 hitless innings in the AL Division Series. Yesavage expressed concern over the abuse his family has faced due to his on-field performances.
The Mariners, led by manager Dan Wilson, demonstrated resilience in their Game 1 victory and prepared to start Logan Gilbert in Game 2. The series is poised to move to Seattle’s T-Mobile Park for Game 3, promising an intense and competitive matchup as the ALCS progresses.
