“Pioneering Puppeteer Sid Krofft Dies at 96”

Sid Krofft, a prominent puppeteer known for creating colorful characters on television in the 1960s and 1970s, passed away peacefully on April 10 at the age of 96. His friend and business partner Kelly Killian shared the news on Instagram. Krofft, along with his brother Marty, was the creative force behind various TV series, notably their first show, “H.R. Pufnstuf,” which gained a dedicated following.

Describing the show as their “first baby,” Krofft and his brother introduced audiences to a whimsical world featuring a young boy, a talking flute, and a six-foot-tall dragon. His publicist, Adam Fenton, highlighted Krofft’s passion for connecting with his fans until the very end.

Close friend and fellow puppeteer Ronnie Burkett recalled Krofft’s enduring childlike enthusiasm and dedication to his craft. Reflecting on Krofft’s career, Burkett emphasized the importance of staying focused and maintaining passion over the years.

The Krofft brothers’ work was often described as subversive, with their innovative approach to puppetry challenging traditional norms in children’s entertainment. Burkett noted the campy and absurd elements in their shows, such as the character Witchiepoo, adding a unique and entertaining twist to the genre.

Christian Jacobs, a TV producer and musician, praised the Krofft brothers for their boundless energy and commitment to bringing joy and laughter to audiences. He emphasized the value of embracing a childlike wonder in creating children’s entertainment, a sentiment embodied by Sid Krofft throughout his career.

Recalling a memorable encounter with Krofft at a show in Los Angeles, Jacobs shared a touching moment where Krofft bestowed upon him the title of “king of marionettes.” The experience left a lasting impression on Jacobs, highlighting the impact of having mentors like Krofft in the industry.
