“Ye Postpones Marseille Concert Amid Controversy”

Date:

Ye, the artist formerly known as Kanye West, has decided to delay his upcoming performance in Marseille, France, following the announcement by French authorities of their intent to prohibit the concert. This choice by Ye comes in the aftermath of being barred from entering the U.K., where he was set to headline the Wireless Festival in July, due to backlash regarding his past antisemitic comments.

Expressing his decision on the social platform X, Ye stated, “After thorough consideration, I have personally chosen to postpone my Marseille, France show until further notice.” He further mentioned, “I realize that it will take time for my commitment to making amends to be truly understood.”

The rapper, who altered his name in 2021, was initially slated to perform at Stade Vélodrome in Marseille on June 11. French Interior Minister Laurent Nuñez has assured that all necessary actions will be explored to prevent the show from proceeding as planned.

Marseille Mayor Benoît Payan had previously opposed Ye’s visit to the culturally diverse city, citing the city’s extensive history of immigration. Payan firmly stated, “I will not allow Marseille to be used as a platform for those who propagate hatred and blatant Nazism. Kanye West is not invited to the Vélodrome, our symbol of unity and the heart of Marseille.”

Ye has faced significant backlash for his antisemitic statements and expressions of admiration for Adolf Hitler. The artist had released a song titled “Heil Hitler” and promoted a swastika T-shirt for sale on his website. Authorities in Australia revoked Ye’s visa in July following the release of the controversial single.

In a letter published as a full-page ad in the Wall Street Journal in January, the 48-year-old artist apologized, attributing his actions to a manic episode induced by his bipolar disorder. Ye emphasized his accountability in his recent message on X, stating, “I take full responsibility for my actions, but I do not wish to involve my fans in this situation. My fans mean everything to me. Excited for upcoming shows. See you at the top of the world.”
