Date:

Zach Galifianakis, a Hollywood actor, has ventured into a new project upon relocating to a southern British Columbia island. He is spearheading a documentary series titled “This is a Gardening Show,” set to debut on Netflix this month in conjunction with Earth Day on April 22.

With a passion for gardening cultivated over 25 years as a hobbyist, Galifianakis aims to share his love for gardening with a wider audience. Emphasizing the rich tradition of exceptional gardeners in the Vancouver Island area where he has been a frequent visitor for three decades, the actor hopes to inspire the next generation to carry on this legacy.

Galifianakis particularly stresses the importance of educating children about the origins of food, considering the current food landscape’s challenges. In the series, he engages with young students at Brooklyn Elementary School in Comox, blending his signature offbeat humor with practical insights on cultivating fruits and vegetables.

The actor underscores the necessity for youth to be informed about climate issues, emphasizing the importance of adaptation in the face of potential environmental challenges. Alongside interactions with young gardeners, the show also showcases experienced farmers and growers from the southern British Columbia islands.

Arzeena Hamir, a food security advocate and co-owner of Amara Farm in the Comox Valley, features in the series, highlighting the relevance of gardening in current times. She believes the show’s quirky approach to food growing could attract a new audience, especially amidst global concerns about food prices and sustainability.

As the series launch approaches, Galifianakis is dedicating his efforts to nurturing his own island garden, with a special focus on cultivating his prized sugar pumpkins. Planning to make multiple pumpkin pies for Christmas, the actor expresses his culinary aspirations, aiming to share his homegrown produce with others.
