“Measles Cases Surge in Alberta: Caution Urged for 2026”

Date:

Alberta experienced a significant rise in measles cases in 2025, with more than 2,000 confirmed cases reported by the end of the year. While there has been a notable decrease in transmission rates, health experts caution that the measles virus remains a persistent threat in the upcoming year.

Craig Jenne, a professor specializing in microbiology, immunology, and infectious diseases at the University of Calgary, highlighted that Alberta had the highest per capita measles infection rates in the Americas in the previous year. The outbreaks, which began in March, were triggered by several cases originating from outside the province, leading to widespread transmission within Alberta.

The province of Alberta and Ontario collectively accounted for the majority of measles cases in Canada in 2025, resulting in the country losing its measles elimination status. Data from the Public Health Agency of Canada revealed that Ontario reported a significant portion of the nation’s measles cases.

Measles is a highly contagious disease that can lead to severe complications, including pneumonia and even death. Tragically, there was one reported measles-related death in Alberta, where a premature baby born to a mother infected with measles during pregnancy passed away shortly after birth.

Despite the challenges, there has been a slowdown in new case counts in Alberta, and large outbreaks are currently not a concern. Health authorities have emphasized the importance of continued vigilance, as measles still poses a threat and new cases are being identified in the province.

Efforts to combat the spread of measles have included targeted vaccination campaigns, expanded clinic hours, and province-wide outreach initiatives. The province saw a substantial increase in measles vaccinations administered in 2025 compared to the previous year.

Dr. Karina Top, a pediatric infectious disease physician, emphasized the ongoing threat posed by measles and the possibility of future surges. Measles exposure advisories remain in effect in certain zones of the province, indicating the need for sustained caution and preventative measures.

Health officials underscored the importance of maintaining high vaccination rates to prevent future outbreaks and protect vulnerable populations. Despite progress in controlling the spread of measles, continuous monitoring and proactive measures are essential to safeguard public health.
