“WWII Researcher Unearths Heroic Canadian Soldier’s Legacy”

Date:

On a typical summer Sunday afternoon, Michele Facchini wouldn’t usually be found in the scorching fields northwest of Ravenna, Italy, wielding a metal detector. However, on July 6, he deviated from his routine as a Second World War researcher and educator to explore the outskirts of Russi, near the Lamone River.

During his metal-detecting excursion, Facchini stumbled upon remnants of bullets and shrapnel, triggering memories of the intense battles that took place in the area in December 1944. A farmer then presented him with a duffel bag, revealing the name and regimental numbers of Canadian soldier Hector McDonald, who had fought valiantly in the region.

The discovery of McDonald’s belongings reignited a long-forgotten tale of heroism and sacrifice, connecting him once again with his family. Despite the absence of surviving photographs, historical documents provided details about McDonald’s physical appearance and journey from a coal miner in Cape Breton to a courageous soldier in the North Nova Scotia Highlanders and West Nova Scotia Regiment.

Tragically, McDonald met his untimely demise at the age of 28 when he stepped on a landmine near the Lamone River in December 1944. His dedication to duty and sacrifice were honored through a heartfelt ceremony attended by his great-grandniece, Stacey Jordan, who received the duffel bag as a poignant memento of her family’s legacy.

The remarkable discovery, facilitated by a network of dedicated Second World War researchers, highlighted the enduring impact of McDonald’s service and the importance of preserving and honoring the stories of those who fought against tyranny and oppression. His legacy lives on through the efforts of individuals like Facchini and the heartfelt connections forged between past and present generations.
