“Olympian Ilona Maher Inspires With Own Barbie Doll”

Date:

American Olympic athlete Ilona Maher has transitioned from the rugby field to the toy aisle by being commemorated with her own Barbie doll following her bronze medal win. Maher made waves on social media during her recent Olympic appearances, elevating the profile of rugby in a country where the sport typically remains on the fringes. She clinched the bronze medal with the U.S. team in Paris last year.

Expressing her excitement, Maher, a prominent figure in rugby, shared her anticipation of giving the Barbie doll to a young girl, envisioning the joy of young fans seeing themselves reflected in the doll. The Maher Barbie, created by Mattel, is set to hit stores next year.

Emphasizing body positivity, Maher ensured that the doll mirrors her physique, complete with her distinct red lipstick, braided ponytail, broad shoulders, and muscular build. She commended Mattel for capturing her likeness accurately, noting the doll’s athletic appearance, complete with knee pads and detailed replicas of her Adidas cleats.

In addition to Maher, three other rugby players—Ellie Kildunne of England, Portia Woodman-Wickliffe of New Zealand, and Nassira Konde of France—will also be immortalized in doll form to mark International Day of the Girl. Maher’s doll is slated for release in fall 2026, standing as a representation of diverse beauty standards and femininity.

Maher expressed her hope that her Barbie doll, with its strong features, will influence young girls’ perceptions of beauty, challenging traditional notions of femininity. She praised the opportunity for girls to play with dolls that reflect a broader spectrum of beauty ideals.
