Canadian swimmer Summer McIntosh has withdrawn from the World Aquatics Swimming World Cup events due to an undisclosed illness. The 19-year-old missed the first event in Indianapolis and has confirmed that she will not be participating in the upcoming meets in Westmont, Illinois, and Toronto. McIntosh expressed her disappointment at missing the chance to compete in front of her hometown fans but is prioritizing rest and recovery to get back in the pool.
This was supposed to be McIntosh’s debut international competition under the coaching of Bob Bowman, known for mentoring Olympic champion Michael Phelps. McIntosh relocated to Austin, Texas, to train with Bowman at the end of August. The World Cup tour, featuring top swimmers, offers a total prize purse of $1.2 million, with bonuses for world records.
Despite McIntosh’s absence, Canadian swimmers like Josh Liendo, Kylie Masse, Mary-Sophie Harvey, and Ilya Kharun are set to participate in the World Cup. Kharun has already secured consecutive gold medals in the tour, triumphing in the 200m butterfly and the 50m fly events. The competition also features renowned swimmers such as Leon Marchand, Noe Ponti, Mollie O’Callaghan, Regan Smith, Thomas Ceccon, and Kaylee McKeown.
