“Fish Population Soars as Dam Removal Revives St. Croix River”

Date:

Conservationists have observed an increase in the number of alewife and blueback herring returning to the St. Croix River following the removal of a hydroelectric dam two years ago. The St. Croix River, also known as the Skutik, runs through the southwest New Brunswick town of St. Stephen and was previously home to the Milltown Dam, which was dismantled with the assistance of conservation efforts.

Alexa Meyer from the Passamaquoddy Recognition Group, a group led by Indigenous peoples representing the Peskotomuhkati Nation, expressed the rejuvenation of the river, stating that it now feels vibrant and beautiful. Meyer mentioned a rise in the fish population to over one million from around 800,000 in the last recorded count, emphasizing that the river’s capacity could support between 50 to 100 million fish.

Reflecting on the historical significance of the river, Meyer highlighted its importance as a traditional fishing ground for the Peskotomuhkati Nation, underscoring the cultural and social value that the reopening of the dam symbolizes for the community.

Matt Abbott, from the Conservation Council of New Brunswick, has been facilitating discussions at the river to honor its history and foster personal connections. Abbott noted that the removal of the dam not only benefitted the fish population but also restored the cultural and social ties that were impacted by the dam’s presence.

Participants, like St. Stephen resident Peter Brown, shared their memories and connections to the river during storytelling sessions, highlighting the emotional attachment people have to the natural environment. While some expressed concerns about losing a piece of heritage with the dam’s removal, Abbott emphasized the importance of recognizing the ongoing connection to the river without the dam’s presence.

The cultural restoration efforts, embodied through storytelling sessions and communal gatherings, aim to instill a sense of belonging and encourage continued advocacy for the preservation and appreciation of the St. Croix River.
