“Disney Pulls ABC & ESPN from YouTube TV”

Date:

YouTube TV subscribers are no longer able to access Disney channels such as ABC and ESPN due to a disagreement between the two parties over a new content distribution deal. In addition to these channels, other missing networks on Google’s pay TV platform include the Disney Channel, FX, and Nat Geo.

In a recent blog post, Google’s pay TV platform revealed that Disney had proceeded with its threat to suspend content during the negotiation process. The dispute could have implications for the coverage of upcoming college football games, as well as NBA, NFL, and NHL matches.

YouTube, the leading internet TV provider in the U.S. boasting over nine million subscribers, highlighted that viewers were alerted to the dispute through on-screen notifications. The platform accused Disney of using the blackout threat as a bargaining tactic to raise subscription prices, benefiting Disney’s streaming services like Hulu + Live TV and Fubo.

Expressing disappointment on behalf of subscribers, YouTube urged Disney to engage in constructive dialogue to restore the networks to YouTube TV. To appease affected users, YouTube announced a $20 credit in the event that Disney content remains unavailable for an extended period. The base subscription for YouTube TV is currently priced at $82.99 per month.

Disney countered by stating that YouTube TV was unwilling to pay reasonable rates for its channels, leading to the denial of valued content to subscribers. Disney criticized Google’s alleged market dominance and accused the tech giant of leveraging its power to disrupt competition and negotiate below industry standards. Despite these challenges, Disney expressed a commitment to promptly resolving the situation.
