Trump Administration Slashes Refugee Cap, Prioritizes White South Africans

Date:

President Donald Trump has reduced the number of refugees allowed into the United States, shifting priorities to favor white individuals from South Africa over those fleeing conflict and persecution. The Trump administration has set a cap as low as 7,500 for the 2026 fiscal year, a significant decrease from the previous limit of 125,000 set under the Biden administration. The decision, outlined in a notice on the Federal Register, marks a historic low for refugee admissions since the program’s establishment in 1980.

While the White House did not offer a specific rationale for the sharp decrease, the new policy places emphasis on admitting refugees from the Afrikaner white minority in South Africa. This move has raised concerns as it sidelines individuals escaping various crises such as persecution in Afghanistan, violence in Sudan, and gang conflicts in Haiti.

Sharif Aly, president of the International Refugee Assistance Project (IRAP), criticized the administration for politicizing the refugee program and granting preferential treatment to Afrikaners. According to Aly, the exclusion of refugees who have undergone extensive security screenings and are currently facing perilous situations is unjust.

The policy shift under Trump has drawn criticism for its focus on unverified claims and its departure from the U.S.’s traditional role in assisting displaced populations globally. The decision to prioritize white South Africans has been met with skepticism, especially as it contrasts with the admission of refugees from conflict-ridden countries like the Democratic Republic of the Congo, Afghanistan, and Syria in previous years.

Advocacy groups, including Human Rights First, have condemned the policy as racially motivated and detrimental to the country’s moral standing. The move has sparked outrage among organizations working with refugee populations, who view it as a betrayal of vulnerable individuals seeking safety and protection.

The decision to limit refugee admissions to the U.S. and prioritize white South Africans has stirred controversy and raised questions about the administration’s commitment to upholding humanitarian principles in its immigration policies.
