“BAFTA and BBC Apologize for Racial Slur Incident”

Date:

The British Academy Film Awards (BAFTA) and BBC issued apologies on Monday for a racial slur that was accidentally aired during the Sunday show while two actors from the movie “Sinners” were on stage.

The individual with Tourette syndrome who uttered the offensive word expressed deep regret, clarifying that it did not reflect their personal beliefs. The incident occurred as actors Michael B. Jordan and Delroy Lindo, both Black, were presenting the award for best visual effects at the BAFTA ceremony.

Host Alan Cumming had previously mentioned Tourette syndrome advocate John Davidson, who inspired the BAFTA-nominated film “I Swear,” leading to an apology for the offensive language heard. Cumming explained the involuntary nature of Tourette syndrome tics and expressed regret if anyone was offended.

Following the incident, the academy acknowledged the hurt caused by the offensive language and praised Michael B. Jordan and Delroy Lindo for their professionalism during the situation. Tourettes Action, a Tourette syndrome charity, emphasized the involuntary nature of tics and called for understanding about the condition.

Tourette syndrome is a neurodevelopmental disorder characterized by involuntary movements or sounds known as tics, which can worsen with excitement or anxiety. People with Tourette syndrome may experience vocal tics, including coprolalia, which involves involuntary swearing or socially unacceptable language.

The BBC, which broadcasted the ceremony, apologized for the unintentional airing of the offensive word associated with Tourette syndrome. The program containing the slur was later removed, and the BBC assured that the offensive content would be edited out.

The movie “I Swear” received two BAFTAs, with Robert Aramayo winning the best actor award for his portrayal of John Davidson. Representatives for the film and the actors involved have not yet responded to requests for comment.
