Conservative Leader Pierre Poilievre has written a strong letter to the prime minister in anticipation of his upcoming meeting with the U.S. president, expressing disappointment in Mark Carney’s handling of trade matters and urging him to secure beneficial outcomes for Canada.
In the letter shared with CBC News, Poilievre criticized Carney for failing to fulfill his promise to negotiate favorable trade deals for Canada and provide relief from tariffs, particularly regarding border and fentanyl-related tariffs, as well as Section 232 tariffs on steel, aluminum, autos, and other Canadian goods.
Poilievre highlighted the escalating pressure from President Trump, citing new tariffs on lumber and furniture along with increased rates on existing tariffs as indicators of unsuccessful negotiations. Poilievre emphasized the need for Carney to ensure the removal of tariffs on softwood lumber, steel, aluminum, and autos, and address discriminatory Buy American rules that affect Canadian builders, objectives already pursued by the government.
The upcoming meeting between Carney, cabinet ministers, and the U.S. president aims to focus on shared economic and security priorities. Poilievre encouraged Carney to collaborate with Conservatives to honor his commitment to negotiating favorable tariff terms with the U.S. Poilievre’s letter stressed the importance of delivering tangible results for Canadian workers and businesses, warning against excuses and unfulfilled promises.
While Poilievre did not propose specific alternatives for negotiations, government sources suggest optimism that Carney may achieve progress on steel tariff relief during the meeting. Laura Dawson, an expert on Canada-U.S. relations, expressed cautious optimism, indicating that Carney’s repeated engagements with Trump signal a likelihood of positive developments in trade discussions.
Canada’s goal is to secure steel tariff adjustments before the CUSMA review process begins next year, with expectations of significant progress in the ongoing negotiations. Dawson anticipates a positive announcement following the meeting, facilitated by Carney’s influential role in the discussions.
