“Measles Alert: Contact Warnings in Southern Manitoba”

Date:

Public health authorities caution that individuals may have recently come in contact with measles at an emergency department, a school, and a restaurant in southern Manitoba. Those who were present at Garden Valley Collegiate in Winkler on specific dates and times are advised to monitor for symptoms until certain dates. Similarly, individuals who visited the Outpost Grill in Winkler and the Boundary Trails Health Centre ER are also urged to watch for symptoms within designated time frames. The public is strongly encouraged to review their immunization records and ensure they are current with the measles vaccine.

Measles is a highly contagious disease transmitted through respiratory droplets, with the virus capable of lingering in the air for up to two hours. Symptoms typically manifest between seven to 21 days post-exposure and may include fever, runny nose, drowsiness, red eyes, and characteristic white spots in the mouth and throat. A red rash usually appears several days later, spreading from the face downwards. Complications such as ear infections, diarrhea, pneumonia, and encephalitis can arise from measles.

As of November 29, Manitoba has reported a total of 270 confirmed and 22 probable measles cases this year. Most individuals recover fully within a few weeks, but infants, adults, and those with weakened immune systems are at a higher risk of complications. Notably, 16 measles patients in Manitoba have required hospitalization in 2021, with a majority being children under the age of 10.

It is essential for the public to stay vigilant, especially if they were present at the specified locations during the outlined periods, to prevent further spread of the virus and safeguard their health.
