Controversy Over Potential Cabot Golf Course Expansion

Date:

The company managing the Cabot Links and Cliffs golf courses is exploring the possibility of a new development that would involve a section of West Mabou Beach Provincial Park, a region safeguarded by legislation and previously off-limits for such ventures.

During a press briefing at Province House, Natural Resources Minister Tory Rushton revealed that representatives from the Cape Breton organization have presented some concepts to the province. Rushton emphasized the government’s focus on initiatives that can generate economic advantages, high-quality employment opportunities, and benefits for Nova Scotians.

Two years ago, Rushton and Premier Tim Houston adopted a different stance when the company expressed interest in obtaining a Crown land lease to construct a third 18-hole golf course. Back then, it was determined that existing regulations did not permit the development of a golf course within a provincial park.

Despite the past opposition, the current proposal by the company remains uncertain. Nadine Hunt, a staunch advocate for maintaining the park’s protected status, expressed disappointment at the potential challenge posed by Cabot.

Hunt criticized Cabot for capitalizing on perceived political opportunities to advance their agenda. A study conducted in 2019 highlighted the ecological significance of the park, which hosts a variety of rare plant and animal species, including those protected under provincial laws.

Kyle MacQuarrie, the Progressive Conservative MLA for Inverness and Rushton’s ministerial assistant, acknowledged the divided opinions within the community. MacQuarrie emphasized the importance of gathering input from constituents to inform future discussions.

MacQuarrie refrained from disclosing his personal stance on the issue and mentioned consulting with former Nova Scotia premier Rodney MacDonald, who had been engaged by Cabot for advocacy efforts.

In response to the unfolding situation, Hunt criticized the perceived lack of commitment from the government to uphold the protected designation of the park.
